It has a big, beautiful, bossy taste! Shiitake mushroom and chicken wontons are soaked in a rich sauce and finished with a layer of sesame oil and chili crunch. Yum!
Frozen chicken ravioli is a staple in our freezer, but I usually just steam or fry it and then serve it as an addition to a meal. This is good but could be more enjoyable.
Until now!
Here’s my versatile new recipe for chicken ravioli – steamed chicken ravioli in a spicy sauce that’s somewhere between a dip and a broth. It’s not just wonton soup, it’s a canvas for your creativity. You can add umami-rich shiitake mushrooms, or fresh spinach or bok choy for a burst of color and nutrition. The choice of sesame oil for a stronger flavor or chili oil for a hotter, more vibrant color is yours to make.
It’s a hearty meal and one of my current favorites.
My daughters, while they can’t handle the heat of the chili oil, always enjoy the chicken wontons I steam for them or the teriyaki sauce they love to dip them in. As for Bjork and I, we always feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we lift our bowls to the sky and scoop out the last bites of chili. Not a drop left!
How to make chicken ravioli with Chili sauce
Step 1: Cut the vegetables.
I like shiitake mushrooms (to flavor the broth) and scallions (to make the toppings). I also love the version I make with spinach or bok choy!

Step 2: Fry mushrooms and wontons.
I usually put shiitake mushrooms in the sesame oil first, and then, when they are done, I add wontons.

Step 3: Make the sauce.
I added chicken broth, a little teriyaki sauce, a spoonful of chili oil, and some sesame oil. It’s a dip, a soup, and a cooking oil—three in one.

Step 4: Ladle it into bowls, garnish and serve.
Serve, top with scallions and sesame seeds, and eat.

Chicken ravioli frequently asked Questions
What brand of wonton do you use?
I love frozen mini ravioli sold at Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Bibigo. I also like chicken with coriander or chicken with vegetables!
What can I use instead of mushrooms?
Mushrooms bring a nice umami flavor to the whole dish, but if you don’t like them, try using spinach or bok choi instead of the green stuff. If you can’t find shiitake mushrooms but you like mushrooms, I’ve also used white button mushrooms with excellent results.
How long will the leftover wontons last?
I really love leftovers—I even eat them cold! The sauce absorbs a little, but just enough to keep them spicy and delicious.
What other protein can replace wontons?
There are many types of frozen ravioli and dumplings, and I recommend steaming anyone for 5-7 minutes.
Can you make this vegetarian/meatless?
Yes, we do! Use vegetarian ravioli or dumplings.
Do wontons contain no milk?
Yes, they should be naturally dairy-free.
Are wontons gluten-free?
The pre-made ones I bought in the freezer are not. But you can buy it gluten-free, or you can buy it! Just use this gluten-free brand.
Can you make your wontons?
Yes, of course! This won’t be an SOS-style quick and easy recipe, but it’s delicious. Here’s a top ravioli recipe from The Living Pot.
